On the Friday afternoon of January 21, I got out of school a little early and the light looked promising. So I packed up the camera and radio and headed towards Cheney, WA. In the yard there were 4 PCC engines waiting to make the next run out to Coulee City (PCC 4229, 3004, 4212, 4204). Also MOW was doing a little work off the tracks with some rails nearby. Next I drove out to Babb siding where I an eastbound stack train in the hole. Thinking that a westbound was going to be coming shortly I stopped at the crossing just to the east of the siding to wait. A few minutes later the eastbound pulled out of the siding and rolled by (CN 5750, EMD 9091). I wasn't quite sure what was up but came to the conclusion it must have been MOW holding the line. I liked the consist so well I decided to intercept it again up near Scribner where it was a little more side light for eastbounds. Arriving there I found a westbound hopper train waiting just short of the UP connecting track and Scribner itself (BNSF 5304, 681, 709). I figured that since it was a loaded grain train it didn't have enough horsepower per ton to start up from a stop at Lakeside Jct since that is quite a steep grade. Soon the eastbound stack train pulled through and then I heard that the Z-PTLCHC was coming up behind the stack train soon. I drove down to the west end of Scribner to get a broadside of the Z-train and to wait for the hopper train to pull. The grain train started moving and a little bit later the eastbound rolled through Lakeside Jct and passed me (BNSF 4839, 1095, 4664). Next I hurried into Cheney to get a shot of the westbound coming through town. Then after that I was a race out west. I knew from the scanner that he wouldn't be meeting anybody soon so I hurried and tried to beat him to around Missile Base. Unfortunately this didn't quite work and so I hit the road again. It was close but he barely beat me out to Keystone (I was on all the back roads). In the hole there was an eastbound hopper train that pulled out (BNSF 978, 4306, 804). Next I spent a little time taking some silhouette shots and reflection shots of the sunset. Then I turned around and headed towards Spokane. I missed a westbound hopper train along Sprague lake but found a westbound manifest train in the siding at Fishtrap (BNSF 4667, 4369). And that was it for the day. It was not too bad of an afternoon and there was quite a bit of really good light near the end!
